United Way Presents a Screening: Sentenced

January 8 @ 11:00 am - 1:30 pm

United Way of The Black HillsUnited Way of the Black Hills (UWBH) invites the community to join them at the Journey Museum for a special viewing event addressing the urgent issue of childhood illiteracy.

On January 8, 2025, from 11:00 AM to 1:30 PM. Attendees will experience a screening of SENTENCED, a compelling documentary produced and narrated by four-time NBA champion Stephen Curry.

The film provides an immersive exploration into the impacts illiteracy has on children and communities across the nation,
aiming to inspire action by mobilizing volunteers to support early literacy efforts.

This event will include a grab-and-go lunch during the screening, followed by a panel discussion featuring Hanna Glissendorf (United Way Black Hills), Darbi Hunt (Black Hills Special Services), Camilla Whitman (Literacy Council of the Black Hills), and Sarah Meyers (Custer Public Library).

They will discuss their current initiatives in the Black Hills area, share insights into the challenges of addressing literacy needs in our communities, and offer guidance on how the public can best support these efforts.

Described as “a powerful call to action,” SENTENCED sheds light on the ripple effects of low literacy rates, such as generational poverty, addiction, and neglect, and urges audiences to consider community-based solutions.
